Discount supermarket Aldi has launched what it calls ‘premium’ hampers for Christmas 2017, and many on social media and in the press have compared them favourably to much more expensive hampers available at high-end department store Fortnum & Mason.

If you’re thinking of getting one, we’ve lifted the lid on Aldi’s hamper range to work out the value of the contents inside and see if it’s value for money, or if you’ll be paying a premium to have it packaged this way.

The five hampers are only available online (delivery’s free) and prices range from £20-£100 – the cheapest hampers come in a gift box, while the more expensive ones arrive inside a wicker basket.

Aldi says it has increased stock levels of all its hampers this year, but as they’re popular, these could sell out quickly.

Our verdict:

While considerably cheaper than the Fortnum & Mason alternatives, with these Aldi hampers, we’ve worked out you’re paying £2ish-£16ish for the gift box/basket when you deduct the cost of buying the products included in each hamper individually.

So we reckon these hampers aren’t worth getting if you just want the products, but they could make a decent gift if you don’t want the products for yourself.
